There’s a club in Moose Jaw that makes it cool to go to school on a Friday night.
“We like to give the teens something to do Friday nights,” said Nicole Walchuk, City of Moose Jaw recreation program supervisor.
The Friday Night Activity Club is an ongoing open program at Riverview Collegiate from 6:45 – 10:45 p.m. The program is open to all kids from Grade 6 to Grade 12 and runs until Dec. 13.
“It’s a great start to the weekend for teens and it’s a chem-free atmosphere, so they don’t have to worry about being around drugs or alcohol. It’s a very safe environment and parents don’t need to worry if they’re hanging out there,” Walchuk said.
Walchuk said having the Friday Night Activity Club as an open program is important because it lets the kids do what they want.
“We have the gym as well as the lobby in Riverview. Any of the sports that you can play in the gym, they can play. Whether it be dodgeball, floor hockey, basketball, soccer, you name it,” Walchuk said.
In the lobby, kids can draw, listen to music, make bracelets and play Wii, board games or card games.
Walchuk said there are usually two supervisors who ensure the environment remains safe.
The Community Initiatives Fund sponsors the program. Friday Night Activity Club is free to all participants.
