Prairie South School Division Director of Education Jeff Finell has announced his retirement after eight years of service with the organization.
"I think it's just getting to be that time for me to retire," Finell told the Times-Herald on Friday. "Some people have known for a while, but a staff announcement went out from our board chair on Wednesday."
Finell joined the PSSD as its superintendent of student services in Jan. 2006. He has also served as superintendent of human resources.
Before joining the organization, Finell had served as a teacher, principal, in several superintendencies, and as director of other boards across Saskatchewan.
He also taught in Libya.
"I've been so blessed to have a career that has had some variety to it, where I've had the opportunity to work in different parts of the province and overseas, and where I've been involved in many different and exciting projects," said Finell. "There has just been a lot of great moments."
Along with moments, he said, there have also been "so many wonderful people" who have helped him "really enjoy" his career.
Finell played a pivotal role in the creation of the division through the 2006 amalgamation of school divisions, implemented Learning Improvement Plans and Teams, and provided "long-term support for the School Community Councils," according to a PSSD release.
"We are grateful for Jeff's contributions to the school division," said Shawn Davidson, chair of the PSSD board, in the release. "I know that I speak for my colleagues on the Board of Trustees when I say that he will be missed, but we wish him continued success and much happiness as he starts the next chapter of his life."
The next chapter, according to Finell, is yet to be fully determined.
"I don't have many plans at this point," he said. "My plan immediately will be to enjoy the freedom for a while, and perhaps do some traveling and other things I've been looking forward to doing. Beyond that, I'm just not sure.
"I can see myself wanting to find something that will give me another opportunity to pursue my interests," Finell added. "I've been in Moose Jaw with the Prairie South School Division for the past eight years, and I've really enjoyed this opportunity … It has just been a great experience."
The PSSD board is in the process of finding Finell's successor, and as such, one has not yet been announced.
