Business Women of Moose Jaw

New awards for businesswomen will be given out in March.

“Women are often the unsung heroes behind lots of different organizations and different volunteer initiatives,” said Crystal Froese, chair of the awards nomination committee with the Business Women of Moose Jaw. “So we just really want to highlight the importance of the contribution that women make in our community and in southern Saskatchewan as well.”

On March 8, International Women’s Day, the Business Women of Moose Jaw will host the first annual Spring Sparkle and Shine Salute to Women PRISM Awards for excellent female businesswomen. PRISM stands for perseverance, role model, influential, successful and mentor.

“We’re kind of combining it with an event that we’ve had previously which is the Sparkle and Shine,” said Froese. “(It) used to be more about celebrating and networking as women and so we incorporated the two events together and include the awards presentation within the Sparkle and Shine.”

There are six categories of the PRISM Awards — Community Leadership and Enhancement, Leadership and Management, Science, Technology and Environment, Sport, Culture and Recreation, Lifetime Achievement and Young Woman of Promise.

The Young Woman of Promise category is for a young woman aged 19 and under who has “set an example for others through achievements in academics, outstanding leadership in her school, career or through community building,” according to the nomination form.

"The nomination form is pretty comprehensive. So it’s quite detailed and I think anybody nominated for it is definitely a worthy person,” said Froese. “(The categories) really scope the whole gambit of, I think, all the different areas that women are involved in.”

The nomination committee will decide the winners. The evening will also include six gourmet food stations, cocktails, live entertainment by Stadacona Soul, live auction and the awards presentation. Tickets are $60. All funds raised will go to the Moose Jaw Women’s Transition House.

“We wanted to work with a charitable organization so Moose Jaw Transition House was kind of a perfect fit,” said Froese. “It’s going to be a great evening of wonderful food and live music and networking and meeting new people and then the awards presentation.”

Nominees can be a woman in southern Saskatchewan, including Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Estevan and to the United States border. The nomination deadline is Feb. 21.
