Bearded bluesmen bring Mosaic Place down

If you paid to see a rock show Friday night, ZZ Top and openers Flash Lightnin’ did not disappoint.

The veteran rockers were joined by the Toronto act on the Western Canada leg of their La Futura tour at Mosaic Place, and together the bands brought down the building.

Flash Lightnin’ is an impressive, up-and-coming rock-and-roll band and were perfectly suited to warm up the crowd for the hirsute icons.

Their single, One Pill, is a solid rock track that sounds even better live.

More notable was Dirty Penny, a tune that would fit like a glove if ZZ Top ever decided to cover it.

The stars of the night, of course, were the bearded bluesmen, and they brought everything to bear in their set: a video presentation, a collection of their biggest hits, a few wardrobe changes and even a couple of tunes off their latest album (which shares its name with the tour).

Newer tracksincluding I Gotsta Get Paid and Chartreuse, were enjoyable but many in the crowd paid to hear the classics.

In that respect, they would have left satisfied: ZZ Top played many of its greatest hits, from Sharp Dressed Man (which guitarist Billy Gibbons said they couldn't leave without playing) and Legs to their encore tunes Tush and La Grange.

Wedged comfortably in the middle of ZZ’s set were two incredible covers — one of Jimi Hendrix’s Foxy Lady and the second of Muddy Waters’ down-and-dirty classic Catfish Blues.

At one point in the show, Billy Gibbons asked the capacity crowd if they were having a good time.

The crowd roared.

That says it all.
