Hundreds of belles and even some men visited the Sleigh Belles Open House on Saturday

The event began initially as a once a year Christmas sale but it has since expanded to a bi-annual sale and fundraiser.

“Sleigh bells but bells as in women B-E-L-L-E-S — Southern Belles,” explained organizer of the event, Gladys Baigent-Therens. “Everyone knew us by that name so there was no point in changing it.”

Thirty eight vendors filled the Church of Our Lady hall with soaps, jewelry and other niche gifts and services. Many of the venders are local but some are from out of town, said Baigent-Therens.

“People put out bargains so everyone can do shopping at this time of year for Easter and Mother’s Day,” said Baigent-Therens.

The event isn’t only about selling unique products and increasing business, but it’s also about mingling and conversation.

“It’s a fun way to shop. It’s so much more one-on-one personal for people and even the three of us that organize it,” said Baigent-Therens. “I have spent a fortune already. It’s just a comfortable way to shop.”

The event is also a fundraiser for Regina’s Allen Blair Cancer Centre. It’s a charity that hits close to home for Baigent-Therens.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and it’s myself my sister and daughter who do this event and they are the ones who felt we should switch it to breast cancer,” she said, before explaining that in previous years the event raised money for the Tim Horton’s Children’s Camp.

Baigent-Therens expects donations to total between $350 and $400 and exceed what the open house usually raises by around $100.

“What I think is really nice is a lot of the venders have stepped forward and they are all doing something at their table to help donate too. That’s very pleasing,” she said.
