The allure of big game hunting in Saskatchewan has grown in recent years.

Grenfell resident Michelle Roberts shows off her hunt.

According a press release sent out by the Saskatchewan Government, Thursday, the draw for the 2014 big game hunting season is set to open.

“The big game draw is a much-anticipated event each year and continues to grow in popularity,” Ken Cheveldayoff, environment minister, said in a press release. “The number of hunters applying for Saskatchewan’s most favourable hunting opportunities has increased significantly over the last 10 years. Hunters are advised to review all available draw opportunities and past draw results to assist in making their selections.”

Hunters interested in the big game draw must submit applications by May 31 at midnight.

Hunting, Angling and Trapping License identification numbers (HAL ID) are required to be provided by hunters applying for their draws. Registration for a HAL ID is a one-time requirement. Therefore, if hunters have previously purchased a 2013 or 2014 angling, hunting or license, or applied for the 2013 draw, they have already been assigned a HAL number.

Those numbers can be accessed online at Saskatchewan.ca/huntinganglinglicenses, by phone at 1-855-848-4773, or through private license issuers, ministry offices and select provincial parks.

When awarded, licenses will be made available through the automated license system on a hunter’s HAL account.

The government wants to remind big game hunters to familiarize themselves with the new map and 2014 Saskatchewan Resident Big Game Draw Supplement before submitting their applications.

That and the new wildlife management zone boundary map can be accessed online at Saskatchewan.ca/hunting.
