Multi-garage fire under investigation

The proximity of an earlier garbage can fire to a blaze that destroyed one garage and extensively damaged another has raised suspicions.

Investigators are on scene sifting through the burned-out remains of one of three garages destroyed in a fire Wednesday morning. The fire is believed to be suspicious.

"We consider this fire suspicious in nature because, earlier in the evening, police put out a garbage can fire in the same vicinity," said Rod Montgomery, Moose Jaw's fire chief. "Police and fire investigators are on scene and looking into it."

Firefighters responded to the blaze early Wednesday morning on the 300 block of Duffield Street West.

"One garage was fully involved at the time they arrived, and from radiant heat, the fire had spread to an adjacent garage," explained Montgomery.

In total, three garages were damaged in the blaze, according to a Moose Jaw Police Service release.

Firefighters battled the fire for close to two hours, Montgomery noted.

There were no fatalities, but damage is estimated at $40,000.
