The Moose Jawg Charity Road Race has raised over $85,000 in the past 12 years, with organizers of the event hoping to bring in an additional $20,000 this year.

The event kicked off Canada Day festivities in Wakamow Valley with nearly 500 runners showing up for the 5K and 10K races. An additional 600 racers registered for the Runt Race.

"Just to see the amount of runners again is overwhelming," said Dawn Luhning, race director, whose favourite part of the day was the Runt Race.

"Those are the kids that are going to be running the 5K and 10K down the road. I mean, we already got some kids running those races today and they're only 12-years-old. But to see them line up, they're so excited."

It wasn't just Moose Javians who showed up to the race. Many of the participants travelled from surrounding areas just to take part, like Matt Johnson, who came first in the 5K run at a time of 14:53. He goes to the University of Regina and competes for the track and cross country teams.

"Our coach is a big part of the Moose Jaw community and he trains us in Regina so he's always encouraging us to do this every single year. It's also nice to get a few community races in each year," said Johnson.

There was a not breath of wind in the air, and the sun was beating down strong, a combination every racer seemed to be satisfied with.

"My favourite part of today," said Johnson. "No rain."

The race had another successful year, all in part because of the community involvement said Luhning.

"A big thanks to the people who keep coming back every year. We see the same faces every year and that's great because it means something about this event. That they enjoy it and that they have fun. I'm thankful for all the people around us who make this event successful," said Luhning.

The money from the race will go toward the Moose Jaw Health Foundation.
