Moose Jaw has its first incumbent candidate for the upcoming municipal election.
On Monday, Coun. Mary-Dell Findlay announced her intentions to seek another term on council.
After thoroughly thinking about running again and discussing the matter with her husband, the 71-year-old councillor told the Times-Herald she decided to try to use the skills learned during her first term in a second one.
"I would like to use that wisdom for another term," she said. Findlay said much of a councillor's first term involves simply learning how city council works, so she would be able to enter a second term already possessing that knowledge.
Findlay said, if re-elected, she would like to work on local infrastructure improvement projects, as well as encouraging all members of council to collaborate in promoting the Friendly City for tourism, industrial and business purposes.
She would also like to continue working with municipal organizations on which she currently serves, such as the police commission, tourism board and youth advisory board. Findlay said she wants to be on council when the multiplex project is complete, which was an important issue for her during her current council term.
Regarding campaigning, Findlay said she believes in what she calls the three key rules to successfully running in a municipal election.
"Door knocking, door knocking and door knocking."
So far, Mosaic employee Ernie Penney is the only other person to have announced intentions to run for office in the upcoming election. While he will run for mayor, current Mayor Dale McBain has announced his retirement from municipal politics, as have Councillors Al Schwinghamer and Darin Chow.
This year, Saskatchewan municipal elections are on Oct. 28. City hall will begin accepting candidate nomination forms on Sept. 14 and will continue to do so until 4 p.m. on Sept. 30.
