Former Moose Jaw Police Service Chief Terry Coleman is running for city council.The 63-year-old part-time post-secondary educator announced his campaign on Thursday.He told the Times-Herald his experiences with city police services, as well as the provincial government, give him an understanding of how municipalities work with other government agencies and community organizations in order to achieve the best quality of life for local citizens."It's about working to make the community a good place to live," Coleman said. He added that the decade he spent as local police chief (1997-2007) allowed him to work within the community to achieve this end.

Prior to working in Moose Jaw, Coleman spent 27 years with the Calgary Police Service. Following his time with local law enforcement, he served with the current Saskatchewan Party government as deputy minister for Saskatchewan Corrections, Public Safety and Policing, followed with a stint as deputy minister for Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs before leaving government service in June.Currently, the semi-retired professional teaches part time at the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Alberta and through correspondence at Dalhousie University.Coleman said (if elected) he intends to work towards improving Moose Jaw infrastructure, as well as lending his expertise towards the city's long-term community plan, as helping create such a plan for the local police service was one of his first duties here.He wants to help make Moose Jaw a healthier place to live and work towards improving safety and providing adequate recreational options, as well as opportunities for youth.Carter Haydu can be reached at 691-1265.
