Still a relative newcomer to the Friendly City, Moose Jaw’s Wendy Getchell believes her “fresh eyes” perspective could be an asset in council chambers.

That is one of the reasons why the 50-year-old retired nurse handed in nomination papers at city hall on Monday, making her a councillor candidate in the upcoming Oct. 28 municipal election.

“I’d like to partake in the development of the city,” she told the Times-Herald, adding she first moved to Moose Jaw about three years ago for a job with Five Hills Health Region.

Her career took her elsewhere about 1 1/2 years later, but in June 2008, she decided Moose Jaw was where she wanted to raise her three school-aged children and retire.

“Having seen what else is out there, I think Moose Jaw is a really great place." - Wendy Getchell

“Having seen what else is out there, I think Moose Jaw is a really great place,” she said, adding there is still room for growth in the city.

Also handing in nomination papers on Monday were Scott Maslasz and incumbent candidate Coun. Brian Swanson.

To all the candidates I’d like to hear your comments on what your plans are for; -Better coverage of police around town especially evenings, in residential areas, all night -Crack down on gang activity - Elimination of graffiti on garages and fences and other buildings, other cities have bylaws for the property owner to paint over - To work in a cohesive environment instead of the grandstanding of some councilors as in the past, calling it being fiscally responsible. - For snow removal as there were times we couldn’t get our car out because the snow was too deep and streets not plowed until the undercarriage was rubbing. - To not “manage by crisis” and have a focus on an effective, cohesive, and real vision plan -Bring more job opportunities to the city. -Make use of the vacant buildings throughout -Poor road maintenance -Renovating buildings, storefronts to be more attractive to new businesses -Enforce not shoveling snow out into the streets -keep dogs out of parks -Signs in ditches and at the edges of parking lots –too big, too many -Enforcement of current traffic laws on speeding and aggressive driving -Change bus system so that it is more convenient to use -improvements such as covered bus stops and higher bus frequency, etc. and development of programs to encourage the use of public & alternative transportation. - to finish road construction, there are still streets in Moose Jaw that are not paved just gravel and have been that way for many years under the current council - To stop letting people hold signs for money - it makes our great city very unwelcoming - To have property owners clean up vacant lots of trash and abandoned vehicles

We will be paying for the last RN that was on council for many years to come. Words of advice stay far away from Mary and the rest of the Fab Five!
