A green touch is part of what Larissa Shasko hopes to offer if elected to city council on Oct. 28.

“Support renewable industry wherever we can,” she told the Times-Herald, adding the City of Moose Jaw should declare the Friendly City a non-nuclear zone.

The Saskatchewan Green Party leader handed in nomination papers at city hall on Monday, officially making her a councillor candidate.

The two-time local federal Green Party candidate and one-time local provincial Green Party candidate said her decision to seek municipal office came about six months ago, when her great aunt fell on a derelict piece of local sidewalk and required stitches.

Larissa Shasko - “Support renewable industry wherever we can."

“It was a little incident like this,” Shasko said, adding part of her mission on council (if elected) would be to make Moose Jaw more pedestrian-friendly, with more sidewalks that are better maintained.

Larissa should decide if she wants to be the Green party leader of Saskatchewan or a member of the Moose Jaw council. Green party members deserve better.

Larissa has my vote. After reading through her blogsite I think she would prove to be an effective councilor. In my opinion all the required attributes are there, she just needs the opportunity to get her feet wet.

Hmmmmm... I disagree with Anna1 about the role of public forums. I wish more politicians would mix it up with the locals on a one to one basis. I've learned more about Larissa's position in a paragraph or two than I have about any of the other relatively unknown people (regarding experience) running for council. I also disagree that a poli sci degree is worth squat. Education always has more value than ignorance. At the very least it will teach people how to properly defend their position... something that you could learn to do, Anna1.

Well I've only been away from MJ for 7 years...just wondering why nuclear would be on the agenda. Did you guys build a power plant and some nuclear missle silos while I've been away. There are some old buildings that look like they've been nuked. Wow I can't believe with all this nuclear industry, jobs are still scarce. And to think I never heard about all these nuke problems, and I only live two hours away. I'm coming down this weekend, maybe I'll have to get a tour!

Larissa you're so naive its laughable. FYI if you really want this job learn to live with being in the spotlight which means you don't come onto public posts like a crybaby and chastize people for expressing their opinions however disrespectful you might find them. You're out of your league. BTW A degree in political science is worth squat.

The past majority on counsel said this Multiplex would cure all of Moose Jaw`s problems! All I see is a $40,000,000.00 debt load that wasn`t there before and a major increase in the operating budget to maintain this facility or pardon me, facilitieS. How is Moose Jaw going to take care of it`s well known failing infrastructure problems carrying such a debt? Your answer to this question Larissa would be greatly appreciated, or any other want to be counselors!

I am disappointed by the lack of merit and lack of respect for democracy in the previous posts. I am running for City Council to make sure we do not have a city run by "clowns" or "muppets", or in more respectable terms, people on Council who are there to get their own motives accomplished instead of working for the people of this city. As a student of Political Science and a dedicated political activist, I have real experience to offer on Council and the necessary tools to get real change accomplished in this city. Moose Jaw is my home and I want to see things fixed around here. I also want to see an end to the lack of democracy we have seen on City Council. Do not jump to conclusions so quickly without knowing facts. My position with the Greens is not full-time or even part-time. It is a volunteer role which means I put as much unpaid time into it as life allows for. I have made the sacrifice of studying at the U of R part-time to provide adequate time for my work as a political activist. By the time my position with the provincial Greens starts to require more hours (2011), I will be finished my university degree and will have ample time on my hands. With my current position of GPS leader, there is adequate time to devote the 12 hours/week to city council required of Councillors, although I am never one to do the minimum and so I have set aside many more hours than that per week for City Council work if elected. I ahve a lot I would like to see accomplished during my term. The realities of modern Canadian society demand long work hours to stay afloat, and I am no different. I do not consider myself a politician because of the negative stigma that comes attached to it, but if I did, I would remind you that politicians are people too. I have the experience and skills necessary for the position of City Councillor, and that is why I am running. I can get things done, so why not vote for me instead of criticizing me or calling me a tree hugger when this is simply not the case, and furthermore, is in bad taste.

I like the fact that Larissa saw fit to take on Gary from MJ and let him know where he went wrong ! This is a well written measured response. Larissa Shasko is exactly the kind of councillor that we need at City Hall. Bright, hard working, young, ambitious, motivated, obviously a pretty decent social conscience - I sure hope that enough of the good people of MJ put an X by Larissa Shasko so that she gets a chance to show us what she's got. I think she will not disappoint. Spread the word. Vote for Shasko.

Oh dear god what next, another tree hugger running for council. Good luck Moose Jaw in sorting thru this group. This municipal election has completley turned into a gong show with so many running. God help all of us this has to be the biggest bunch of clowns we've ever had and we've had our fair share of them over the years. Chuckles will end up presiding over all these muppets for the next three years.. Yikes anyone want to buy my house, please!

Declare Moose Jaw a Nuclear Free zone? Let's name it a Unicorn free zone too! No nukes, no unicorns, no shirt, no service, no platform, no problem!

Says alot about her alligence to the Green party. Wish someone would address actual issues that the next council will have to face in 2010 as apposed to just coming up with a wish list of personal fancies. Not directed specifically at this candidate but all are living with their head in the clouds

its just that without proportional representation, s member of the Green Party has zero chance of getting elected. That is a fault of our "first past the post" system; where a party can consistently get 10 or 12% of the vote, but never have any representation in Parliament or the legislature. The system is set up to favour the two big parties, and for sure they don't want to change it any time soon. Why would they? But that's why someone like Larissa should run for council, where she has a decent shot at getting elected. I think she could play a very valuable role on this new council and I plan to vote for her.
