Seeing Saskatchewan through new eyes

It's been very interesting seeing Canada through my parents' eyes.

They are first-time visitors to the country and have mostly been exclaiming over the size of everything.

As we left Regina airport on Saturday, my mum was amazed at the size of the semis and also the amount of sky.

That may sound strange, but in England there seems to be less sky as you can't see as a far because of the many trees and rolling countryside. But I guess that's why Saskatchewan is the "Land of living skies."

We drove to Gravelbourg on Tuesday and my parents were impressed at the very long, wide straight roads.

There were also hardly any other cars on the road (probably because of the rain.) My father said if that happened in England, you would think the plague had come and everyone had been wiped out.

It takes him an hour and a half to drive to work from their home in Redhill, Surrey, to Brentford in Middlesex. It is only 25 miles but because of the amount of traffic, it takes a lot longer than it should.

But here in Canada you can accurately predict how long it will take to drive somewhere. When we drive to Calgary on Saturday, we know it will take six and a half hours. We don't need to worry that we will get stuck in a massive traffic jam.

Once in England my husband and I drove from Shrewsbury to Devon in the summer and it took practically all day because we got stuck in traffic jams on nearly every single motorway we took.

My parents are also impressed by all the friendly people we have met.

We walked down Main Street in Moose Jaw on Wednesday and all the shop assistants were friendly and interested in why my parents were visiting.

They've had to get used to the tax being added on after purchases. In England, value added tax (the UK equivalent to sales tax) is already included on ticket prices.

They were impressed by the murals in the city which really brighten things up everywhere.

There's also smaller differences which are quite amusing, such as why the breakfast cereal Special K in England is made with flakes but in Canada, it's more like puffs.

Another new taste we've experienced is the delicious saskatoon berries. My friend very kindly bought us a saskatoon berry pie from a farmer's market. My mum liked it so much she has bought some saskatoon berry jam to take back to England.

We've also seen quite a lot of wildlife on our travels. We saw the bison at Buffalo Pound on Sunday as well as deer, a pelican and several chipmunks and squirrels.

We also saw a bright blue bird and a bright yellow bird but we are not sure what these were.

I also managed to capture a picture of a jackrabbit — or a hare as we call them in England. We were quite impressed by its size.

Now all we need is to spot a moose and a bear while we are in the Rocky Mountains. I suspect these might be somewhat more elusive, but I'm sure we will have fun looking for them.

I'm really enjoying showing my parents my new home and introducing them to Canadian life. It's amazing just how much in the year we have been living here we now take for granted.

I even said "parking lot" instead of "car park" without thinking about it the other day — much to my parents' amusement.
