A story in Tuesday’s Times-Herald fit quite nicely into the holiday season.
Six little puppies were abandoned in minus 18 weather in a crate beside a semi at a trucking company. Fortunately for them — and for six families — they were discovered fairly soon after being dropped off.
Six truckers each picked up one puppy and walked the brood to the humane society which was nearby. But the inn (humane society) was full.
So they walked them back to their yard with a resolve to either keep the puppy they were carrying or find a good home for it.
Within hours, each of the puppies had a new “forever” home — warm and safe and probably filled with love.
What a nice holiday story. And the real beauty of it is that it is true. At a time of year when many people go the extra step or two to help a fellow human being, these six men went the distance for an animal.
People in need can at least tell someone they need help. They can go to different places seeking help.
An animal in need can communicate that need only to a point and only if it finds the right person to communicate with. These puppies got very lucky.
Without knowing the story behind how they came to be dropped off, the person responsible should at least be commended for choosing a location that was likely to be populated soon after the puppies were dropped off. It’s a shame they weren’t dropped off at the humane society instead, but at least it all ended OK.
Regardless of how everything started, it all fell into place quite nicely for a holiday story and the photograph of the adorable puppy probably brightened a few days Tuesday.
We hope the new families will be as happy with their pets as their pets are likely to be with them.
