Moose Jaw’s Canada Day committee is planning some major changes to the July 1 program.
Since 1974, this city has been celebrating Canada Day through a variety of community activities. In the beginning, the programs ran through the month of June and culminated with the July 1 activities in Crescent Park and the exhibition grounds. Three national awards were received for those programs.
In recent years the events have centred around three locations, with residents able to visit one or all of the sites throughout the day.
For 2010 the committee envisions all events to take place in the outdoor spaces in Wakamow Valley. The committee feels one venue will make it easier for residents to participate in the programs that will be offered, including a fireworks display from the valley.
There is also an expectation that one site will also make it easier for committee members to plan and carry out those plans more effectively.
The committee, of course, is seeking volunteers to assist with the Canada Day observances, and is also hoping to raise sponsorship money to support the plans for the day.
Volunteer committees of long-standing always face the challenge of maintaining vibrant programming that will appeal to a wide age range.
The Canada Day committee is approaching this challenge in a forward manner by attempting to maintain a long tradition, while adding some new sparkle to the event.
