If you are not a sports fan of any kind, you are likely just waiting for this week to pass.

But if you enjoy competition at different levels, this is an ideal week to be in Moose Jaw.

With the Saskatchewan Winter Games currently underway, it’s easy to find a sporting event to attend at a number of different venues around the city. Today starts with a host of medal competitions and ends with a switch to new sports for the second half of the week.

These are kids who play for the sheer love of the game — at least most of them. There’s no multi-million dollar contract waiting to be signed. There’s no endorsement offer on the table. It’s just fun, and that’s what makes these Games so good.

But if you prefer to watch the more “professional” of the amateur athletes, the Olympics can be found on many different cable stations on your television set. While not all those competing are paid — in fact, many are not — you can see the love of the sport on many faces there as well.

Yes, even the NHL players who will make more money in a short career than most of us will make in a lifetime, seem to rekindle their pure love of the game when it comes to the Olympics.

And for those of us who can only sit and watch either set of games, pride is on the line. Here, we are pulling for the South West zone athletes — but are happy with all efforts. And in the Olympics, it’s all about Canadians going for gold.
