The government is looking at ways to hold the line on the federal budget. Yet somehow, it will come up with the money to look into whether the words to O Canada need to be changed.
Of course this is of extreme importance to most Canadians. We can barely tolerate the thought of hearing “in all thy sons command” one more time.
Let’s get real. Most people who even know the words to our anthem — and it seemed like there were a few throughout the Olympics who did not— aren’t losing any sleep over the phrase. Very few women feel slighted by the reference to “sons” in any way.
What’s next? Concerns about all the new Canadians who are singing about their “home and native land” when, in fact, this is not their native land? Are we going to need a parliamentary committee to look into that, too?
Please don’t waste a single penny on this issue.
