More pool hours a good decision

Moose Jaw city council is doing all the right things when it comes to the Phyllis Dewar outdoor pool.

At a budget committee meeting last week, a majority of councillors voted to extend the pool’s early morning lap swim to all five weekdays in June from the current Tuesdays and Thursdays. They also voted to have 12 to 1 p.m. adult swims every weekend all summer long.

These votes come a few months after council decided to help finance some major repair work to the facility with the help of government grants.

It’s nice to see council dedicating funds to the outdoor pool. It’s a valuable resource.

There’s no immediate waterway right in the city or on the outskirts that has a beach facility offering outdoor swimming, so the pool fills a need that way.

Although the city has a fine indoor pool at the Kinsmen Sportsplex, it’s always great to have the option to go to an outdoor pool in the summer and enjoy the scant three months when we have weather warm enough to be outside in bathing suits.

And consider, too, that the pool has a terrific location, right in Crescent Park, next to a children’s water park.

Anyone who has had the pleasure of diving into the Phyllis Dewar on a hot summer’s day, resurfacing to see the sun above, the trees surrounding and the happy faces enjoying the water can thank council for dedicating funds to its increased use and upkeep.
