The news earlier this week that BID is cancelling Sidewalk Days because the city pulled its funding was certainly a disappointment to the people who enjoy the annual June festival.
However, if the city is correct in its assessment that BID (Business Improvement District) was just created for downtown beautification, then organizing events such as Sidewalk Days is outside of the group’s mandate.
However, if BID should not have been organizing Sidewalk Days, and now it is no longer doing so, the city needs to step in to revive the event. This is one of the summertime events many Moose Javians look forward to and they should not be deprived because of some internecine warfare between the city and BID.
The city should stand up and ensure, either by itself or by helping another group, the event returns.
