Moose Jaw will be filled with young women this weekend as the Gild Guide movement in Canada marks 100 years of service.
The Moose Jaw chapter was the second registered in Canada and the first Guides meeting in this province was held right here. So it seems fitting the 100th anniversay is being marked in our city.
Girls can joing the Guiding movement at a young age, learning skills that are age appropriate.
They also learn life lessons such as how to cook, sew, listen to directions, show respect and work with others for the common good.
There are a lot of constructive organizations we can send our children to to keep them active and fit or learning. These groups help keep kids busy and off the streets. They also teach them a variety of skills and, in the case of sports teams at least, helps keep them fit.
But the real bonus that your money can't buy for them is the friendships they make. For some it will be fleeting — maybe just for a weekend like this. But for others, there will be life-long bonds formed and no one can ever have too many friends in life.
Let's face it, kids can make a choice to do something constructive with their time, or thy can choose to be destructive with their time. Usually those involved in clubs or sporting teams don't have time for the latter.
We commend all the young ladies — and the adults who work with them — for making a choice to do something positive with their time. Hopefully they will enjoy their time in the city and each one will make at least one new friend while they are here.
