Up until this week, the Moose Jaw youth advisory committee has consisted of one council member and two representatives from each local high school and SIAST Palliser Campus.
However, in the committee’s wisdom, its decided to add a couple members from the community at large — specifically targeting young adults age 18-25 who do not attend any local high schools or SIAST.
During Monday’s meeting, city council approved a recommendation to extend youth advisory committee membership and the Times-Herald believes this is a great idea. The dynamic of Moose Jaw’s youth tapestry far extends beyond local educational institutions.
There are young people who have either already graduated, dropped out of school, are home schooled or otherwise are not associated with the local high schools or SIAST. A youth advisory committee should represent these people as well.
It was a thoughtful and proactive move on the part of the advisory committee to seek representation beyond its traditional membership base and members should be commended for those efforts.
After all, being young in Moose Jaw is an experience shared by a broad range of residents and not just those in school.
