Hundreds of Moose Javians will gather Friday evening at the speedskating oval in Wakamow Valley to show their support of yet another good cause.
The annual Relay for Life will begin around 7 p.m. with one of the highlights of the evening being the opening lap by cancer survivors. This is usually quite an emotional lap for survivors, their family and friends and others at the Relay.
Another highlight for many is the lighting of the luminaries — candles placed inside white bags with messages for survivors or memorials for those who lost their battle. The lighting of the luminaries happens around dusk and carves a beautiful trail of light around the oval.
This will mark the ninth annual Relay in Moose Jaw and people still come out in droves to support it. Not only do numerous teams show up to walk all night on the oval, but others show up throughout the night to cheer them on and just feel like they are part of a great event.
The hundreds of thousands of dollars that have been raised locally to assist in the search for a cure is the end product of months of planning and hours of walking.
Besides the camaraderie, common goal and bonding through sleep deprivation, those participating are also brought together by an evening of entertainment by locals who give their time to make the evening more pleasant.
To the people who organize the event, the people who participate, the people who entertain, cook, make coffee, keep the bathroom facilities clean, provide security — play any role in the Relay for Life event — congratulations for your ongoing support of such a good cause. With each stride forward cancer researchers make, you can take pride in knowing you helped make it happen.
