Red carpet season arrived in style Sunday with the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles.

Jennifer Lawrence photobombs Taylor Swift during the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday in Los Angeles.

The two big motion picture winners were 12 Years a Slave, which won in the drama category, and American Hustle, which won in the category of musical or comedy.

We at the Times-Herald know this through the useful tool that is the Internet. That’s because none of us tuned in to watch Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host the glamorous awards show.

In this day and age, do you really need to plop yourself on the couch and watch hours of stars dressed to the nines?

No, you don’t.

Most of our knowledge of the events that transpired in Hollywood Sunday evening was, however, the result of social media, and by social media we are talking specifically about Twitter.

There were a number of things we learned about the Golden Globes, including that Taylor Swift should not have been seated in the front row. She is not an actor, right?

Speaking of Swift, the picture of her in which she was photobombed by Jennifer Lawrence, who won best supporting actress in a drama for her role in American Hustle, had to be the highlight of the night. The expression on Lawrence’s face was fantastic, and atypical of most awards shows. It showed just how much of a character the young actress is and will remain as her career continues to blossom.

Even though Lawrence looked as gorgeous as ever, she may not have measured up with Jared Leto.

The Dallas Buyers Club actor took home the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a motion picture.

According to a flourish of tweets, he was better dressed than 70 per cent of the actresses who stepped foot on the red carpet. That included Julia Roberts and the white blouse she wore underneath her strapless black dress. But then awards shows like the Golden Globes are about perfecting the art of fashion before the big one — the Academy Awards, which will be held in early March.

One area the Oscars will have trouble topping the Golden Globes will be in the host category.

According to Twitter, Fey and Poehler were nothing short of extraordinary, and it didn’t hurt that they are as charming and funny as ever, especially after a few drinks. As the drinks flowed at the Golden Globes, thousands of tweets were sent of just how spectacular the awards show was.

There was no need to watch the spectacle since Twitter did all the talking about it for us.
