It’s difficult to not be excited about the future of health care in Moose Jaw. Moose Jaw’s Universal Care Unit (UCU) will be the first of its kind in Saskatchewan and Canada.

The UCU is ambitious and according to Kelly McElree, executive director of the Moose Jaw Health Foundation (MJHF), it is a paradigm shift in health care.

“The new facility is going to take all the principals of new care that’s solely focused on the patient — and gives our doctors and nurses a new way of helping them get their treatment faster,” said Kelly McElree. “This is not only a new way of thinking, but a new way of doing.”

The UCU will have 43 private rooms for patients needing emergency and short-term medical assistance and will aim to centralize all essential services in one place to help patients in crisis as fast as possible.

Over the decades it’s been easy in Saskatchewan to complain about health care. Emergency rooms have been bottlenecked and surgery wait times have been grueling. It has left many wonder if it ever will improve.

The effort put forward by our community shows that it can improve if you work together.

The MJHF have been leaders in the push toward providing the new regional hospital with the best equipment available. It’s a distinctly different attitude than Saskatchewan is accustomed to.

Rather than cutting costs, Moose Jaw leaders want the best health care possible and their willing to work for it. Instead of making excuses, or relying on the government, Moose Jaw is showing what a community that believes in its people can accomplish.

The MJHF is looking to the community to raise $8 million for the UCU. This is a big number but community groups are on board.

Last week the Moose Jaw Union Hospital Auxiliary announced a $250,000 donation toward the UCU, while the Eighth Annual Family First Radiothon on May 1 and 2 is aiming to raise $500,000 toward the project.

The fundraising campaign has only begun but we as a community should have hope that health care in Moose Jaw is about to turn a corner — and it may only be a few million dollars away.
