For many people, animals serve as an integral part of a family structure.

Bear, a two-year-old chocolate lab-moose cross, eagerly waits in the Moose Jaw Humane Society lobby before being taken home with his new owners.
Therefore, you should never need to be told to be kind to animals.
Unfortunately, we live in a society where some members of the population believe animals are nothing more than punching bags and are harmed by other forms of mistreatment.
Enter Be Kind to Animals Week.
Dedicated to bringing awareness of treating all animals with the respect they deserve, the weeklong campaign is in its 99th year.
Although it originated in the United States, the awareness brought by Be Kind to Animals Week is felt in Canada, including the Friendly City.
Stray Cat Rescue and Protection Society (SCRAPS) encourages our city to be involved in being kind to cats, as well as other animals.
Some of the ways the organization encourages members of the community to show compassion to animals includes becoming involved by way of volunteering, adopting pets and donating to animal welfare.
There are hundreds of dogs, cats and other animals in Moose Jaw that are asking — with those puppy dog eyes and sweet little purrs — for love to be shown to them.
In addition to SCRAPS, the Moose Jaw Humane Society is always looking to brighten the lives of animals in their possession by providing them with a family they can spend time with and be cared for by.
However, in our busy lives it can be hard to add to our families because we don’t believe we will have the time to take care of them the way we should.
Even if that is the case, take time to be kind to animals.
Even if you own one, two, or six pets, they deserve to be treated like humans — minus being fed like humans.
Feed them, cuddle with them, play with them and treat them like the furry family members they are.
But do so beyond Be Kind to Animals Week. Treat them with respect and compassion all 52 weeks of the year. They deserve it.
