Finding balance within your career

We all want to get paid. Now, we may not all want to work, but if we want some cheddar — aka money — we don’t have a choice. 

We have to pay for a roof over our heads and put food on the table for ourselves and our families.

For most of us, work consumes at least 40 hours of our week — and for many, that number can reach upwards of 50 to 80 hours a week. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that there is life outside of work and it can feel like our jobs consume us.

If you run your own business or work an office job, the phone calls and emails hover over us 24 hours a day. Those with poor will-power — or perhaps those who believe checking and replying to emails after hours is necessary, in many ways, you literally may not actually have a life outside of your job.

Incase you workaholics haven’t realized it, though —this isn’t healthy for you, your family or even your work life.

You need life balance.

Holly Hamann, co-founder of TapInfluencer, a social media marketing company, spoke to the BBC about work-life balance and said the most defining moment of your day is when you first wake up.

“You have a choice about the first information you expose to your brain. By meditating, exercising, journaling, or doing something reflective for those first 30 minutes instead of opening the digital floodgates, you allow yourself to start your day recharged and aware of your priorities.”

Easier said than done, when many people are now awakened by their cellphone. However, maybe more of us should just invest in an alarm clock. It would help us with the temptation to be updated on our work and social life in those first few precious moments before and after work.

Perhaps you are like an energetic rabbit, who can’t calm your “work brain” no matter how hard you try. The doctor will tell you to get some exercise.

Your response may be: “But, it’s so hard! I’m so tired after work. I have kids I have to drive to soccer practice.”

Those are some good excuses. But, it will be good for you. Even if it’s only once or twice a week. There is a time for sitting on the couch and resting your body and there is a time to get away from your phone and your worries. The best option is to join arec sports team. It will be good for your health and instead of worrying about work you can think about scoring a game winner.

You may not like it, but work will probably be a major part of your life until you are in your 60s.

Yes, that is kind of depressing.

However, if you aren’t able to separate it from your personal life, it will consume you. It doesn’t have to.

Make some important decisions and take your life back.
