With a bout schedule twice as big as last’s year, the Moose Jaw Jaw Breakers are itching to get back on the track after two months of much needed rest. The local roller derby team is currently gearing up for their first away game in Swift Current in a couple of weeks to start their season.

“We’re excited and its fun to get back on the track,” said Natosha Wareham of the Jaw Breakers. “After a two month break, it took us awhile to get our feet back under us and we are focusing on endurance and new strategies.”

The team still holds “fresh meat” practices for new players that want to try the sport on Monday evenings and their first benchmark test is Apr. 16 to determine if they have the skills to make the team. The new players have to perform a set of skills, including how to fall properly, skate 25 laps in 20 minutes, properly blocking and hitting all while being a safe opponent so not to hurt themselves or others on the track.

“It is the same core, the same group of girls that was playing in November,” said Wareham. “We are hoping to have a few new ones with us when we play our first home game.”

The Jaw Breakers will have five home games this season starting on May 5 against the Killa’Bees from Saskatoon. They will play teams from Rocanville, Swift Current and Medicine Hat, Alta. before their tournament in October.

“There are some new and old teams,” said Wareham. “Its nice to get new people, its exciting. Its nice to meet new people in the game.”
