The opening ceremonies are completed, the flame was lit and Monday began Day 1 of the Saskatchewan Summer Games.

Team South West had eight different events teams and individuals competed in to start the Games.

On the diamonds, South West boys’ baseball team dropped their two opening games to South East (9-2) and Saskatoon (5-4).

In the field, the female soccer team split a pair of games. In their first game against Lakeland, they dropped a 2-1 decision. Moose Jaw’ Rachel Dorais scored the lone goal for Team South West. They rebounded with a 13-1 victory over Team North in the evening. Allison Billy of Moose Jaw led the way with three goals, Mackenzie Froelich and Karrie Therrien (Swift Current) had two goals, as did Moose Jaw’s Aby Korbo and Leayne Young-Geiger. Brooke Vallee (Swift Current) and Kirah Brown (Moose Jaw) added the other goals.

On the court, the female basketball team split their two games. In the morning, they lost 55-26 to Prairie Central, but rebounded with a 51-23 win over Team North in the afternoon.

The boys’ basketball team also spilt their opening matches with a 76-30 loss to Lakeland, but a 55-33 victory over Team North in the afternoon.

In tennis singles action, Syndi Morrisette (North) defeated Gracie Fisher (Moose Jaw) in two sets, 6-4 and 6-4. In male singles, Moose Jaw’s Brock Wourms-Rowe defeated Stephen Sweap (North) 6-0 and 6-1. In female doubles, Team South West (Shae DeMarce/Morgan Patsack) defeated Team North 6-1 and 6-0. In males’ doubles action, Team South West were also victorious in two sets. Cauy Cobb and Mathew Martineau of Moose Jaw defeated Team North 6-2 and 7-5. In mixed doubles, Anna Folk and Liam Young of Moose Jaw defeated Team North 6-2 and 6-3.

Team South West won two gold, four silver and five bronze medals in the pool.

Golf and Canoe/Kayak were also held on Day 1, but no scores were recorded on the Saskatchewan Summer Games website.
