Majority of leagues get underway this weekend

Several Briercrest Clippers teams wrapped up their final pre-season games over the weekend. With the majority of the leagues getting under way on Oct. 26/27 the Clippers teams saw what areas still need improvement prior to season openers.

On Saturday, the Clippers women’s volleyball team finished with a 0-2 loss in a round-robin tournament against Lakeland College and Medicine Hat College.

In their first game, they were dropped 3-1 by Lakeland 25-12, 25-22, won the third set 25-18 and lost 25-17 in the fourth set. The Clippers also lost 3-1 to Medicine Hat College. The opened the game with a 25-18 win, but dropped the next three sets 25-21, 26-24 and 25-18.

They will open their season this weekend at Grand Prairie Regional College. The men’s volleyball team will also open their season the same weekend at the same college.

The men’s basketball team won their first game on Saturday, pulling off the 85-78 win over Mayville State University, but lost their second game 100-91 in overtime. They will open their season this Friday at home against Lakeland College and Augustana Faculty.

The women’s basketball team lost 124-53 on Friday to Mayville State University and also was on the losing side, 112-44 on Saturday. They will also the season at home against Lakeland College and Augustana Faculty this weekend.

In regular season action, the Clippers men’s hockey team fell to 0-4 after losses to NAIT at the Barkman Arena. On Friday, Branden Whitehawk continued his scoring streak in a 9-1 loss. NAIT goaltender, Shannon Szabados, who is a team member on the Canada Women’s National Team, stopped eight shots and Jesse Chenard of Briercrest made 70 saves in the loss. On Saturday, Manny Schellenberg scored the lone goal in an 8-1 defeat. The Clippers team will travel to Keyano College for two road games this weekend.
