The Briercrest Clippers men’s basketball team remains a top of the standings in the nation after a weekend sweep over Red Deer College.
On Friday, the Clippers fought hard to pull off a 95-90 win after a slow start, but were able to assert themselves in the paint.
The team relied on their veteran core of Graydn Childerhose, Matt Myers and Kendell Boese as well as strength off the bench. The Clippers didn’t have the lead until less than five minutes left in the game.
Childerhose had a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds and Caleb Klassen had a solid game at point guard with 11 points, five rebounds and six assists.
On Saturday, the Clippers got late game heroics from their captain, Myers with a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds left in overtime to get a 96-95 win over Red Deer.
Briercrest struggled to score in overtime, despite forcing Red Deer into turnovers. Childerhose had a game high 24 points for the Clippers.
The Clippers will host Medicine Hat College this weekend at the Reimer Gym.
The Clippers men’s hockey team had two must win games over the weekend to keep their playoff chances alive, but the math speaks for itself after they dropped both home games to the Concordia Thunder. On Friday, goaltender Jesse Chenard set an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) all time saves record with 3,459 saves in a 6-1 loss. The fifth-year player will increase that record as the team still has four games left in the season.
Lucas Ford scored the lone Clippers goal in the loss.
On Saturday, the Thunder continued to roll as the Clippers continue to battle the injury bug. Briercrest were looking to avenge their earlier loss, but Concordia was just too much in their 6-3 win.
Manuel Schellenberg scored for the Clippers in the first period and Josh Dufrense scored in the middle frame. Starting goaltender Christian Mueller was forced out of the game in the second period due to an injury and Chenard came in relief.
The Clippers are on the road this weekend as they travel to face the Augustana Vikings.
