Eleven area teams advance to basketball regionals

Peacock won a pair of conference titles Saturday and earned the top seed for regionals Monday as the road to Hoopla begins to take shape.

This weekend 21 teams from the South Central district took part in conference play and 11 advanced to their respective regional tournaments. The top four teams at regionals will advance to Hoopla.

All three local 4A boys teams advanced from their conference tournament in Notre Dame.

Vanier beat Regina Johnson 92-76 to advance to regionals and to the conference semifinal. There they lost 93-57 to Peacock. Central beat Swift Current 94-67 in the other semifinal. Peacock beat Central 63-38 in the conference final.

Peacock was named the top seed at regionals and will host. They will open against Estevan Friday at 2:45 p.m. Central earned a No. 5 seed and will travel to four-seeded Saskatoon Marion Graham. Central will meet Warman Friday night. Vanier is an 11 seed and they will play six seed Melfort Friday in Weyburn.

The Peacock girls advanced thanks to an 88-51 win over Lumsden and an 88-45 win over Regina Luther in 4A girls play in Swift Current.

Central lost 64-61 to Luther and Vanier lost 63-45 to Swift Current as both local schools failed to earn a spot at regionals.

Peacock will host a region and will open against North Battleford John Paul II Friday at 6:15 p.m.

In the 3A girls tournament, Caronport beat Assiniboia 89-45 in the conference final as they both advanced. Caronport beat Maple Creek 101-22 in the semifinal and Assiniboia beat Outlook 68-50 in the other semifinal.

Both schools will host a regional. Caronport comes in as a No. 2 seed and will host La Loche Friday at 6 p.m. Assiniboia is the four seed and will meet Macklin Friday at 6 p.m.

In 3A boys play, Assiniboia lost 96-42 to Regina Christian and failed to advance.

In 2A boys play, Caronport beat Riverview 65-28 as they each qualified for regionals.

Riverview is the 16th seed and will be in tough against top-ranked St. Brieux. Caronport is the seventh seed and will travel to Birch Hills. They will play Thunderchild in their first game.

In 1A girls action, Central Butte advanced to regionals. They beat Elrose 47-41 before losing their conference final to Kenaston 85-23. Hebert advanced past Gravelbourg to book a spot at regionals before losing the conference final 70-48 to Regina Harvest City. Finally, Bengough also advanced to 1A regionals as they beat Coronach 45-27 before losing the conference final to 52-42 to Gladmar. Gladmar beat Rockglen 54-47 in the other semifinal. Coronach beat Radville 38-36 but weren't able to advance to regionals.

Central Butte and Bengough ended up in the same regional tournament in Regina. Bengough is the 14 seed and will open against the hosts from Harvest City. Central Butte is the 11 seed and they will play No. 6 Lake Lenore.

In 1A boys action, Coronach and Herbert both qualified with Coronach claiming the conference title with a 101-54 win. Coronach beat Frontier 90-38 in the semifinal and Herbert beat Cornerstone Christian School 87-50 in the other semi.

In 1A conference play in Craik, Central Butte beat the hosts 52-46 before losing their semifinal 71-50 to Outlook LCBI.

Coronach will host a regional as a the second seed. They will play Gladmar Friday at 6 p.m., while Hebrert is the 10 seed and will meet Lipton in Coronach.
