Phillips and Canadian teammates qualify for the world championships
Jonathan Phillips and the Canadian men's under-21 volleyball team are going to take on the world.
The Canadians finished second at the NORCECA Under-21 Men's Volleyball Championships this week in El Salvador. That qualified them for the FIVB World Junior Championships in 2015.
Phillips played his high school volleyball for Central and red shirted last year with Briercrest College.
Canada lost the final 3-0 (29-27, 25-21, 25-21) to Cuba. The Cubans only dropped one set all weekend.
In the preliminary round, Canada beat St. Lucia 3-0 (22-10, 25-7, 25-8) and Puetro Rico 3-2 (25-23, 25-27, 25-24, 23-25, 15-10).
That earned them a spot in the semifinals where the beat the United States 3-2 (23-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-22, 15-9) to earn a trip to worlds. The Americans were the two-time defending NORCECA champions.
Phillips was the only player from Saskatchewan on the team. He played in all three sets against Cuba and four of the five against the U.S.
