Six home games in five nights is the perfect time to try to turn around a struggling season.
Instead of beginning their home stand with some urgency, the Moose Jaw Miller Express struggled out of the gate.
The Express gave up five runs in the top of the first and never fully recovered losing 10-3 to the Regina Red Sox Friday night at Ross Wells Park.
"I'm disappointed in the way we came out," said Express coach J.R. Bierly. "We had a good week of practice and then we just came out flat and with no focus.
"(Starting pitcher Jacob) Wente was solid. Those five runs in the first inning aren't his fault - he got ground balls. He only threw 21 pitches, they were putting the ball in play and the defence just wasn't supporting him."
The Express have now lost five straight games and are 1-7 in the Western Major Baseball League.
"My job is to win. I guess I'm not doing a very good job," said Bierly. "We've got to do a better job of controlling the things we can control - running hard; the attitude has just been poor. I expect us to turn that around (Saturday) or I'll have to make changes."
As bad as the start was, the Express wasted no time getting back in the game. Jaret Chatwood led off the bottom of the first with a single and Brandon Loveridge brought him around with a double. Eric Sim cashed in Loveridge with a sacrifice fly before Ryan Riley hit his first home run of the season.
"We plated three runs in the first and then we just went on cruise control," said Bierly. "I expect so much more in terms of effort, focus, everything."
The game quickly settled down and stayed at 5-3 until the seventh when the Red Sox added another run.
Wente finished with four earned run and 12 hits allowed in six innings. His record falls to 0-4 on the season.
The Express only managed seven hits, but looked to have a rally going in the eighth.
Sim was hit by a pitch and Eric Nutzhorn singled to put two on with one out. The Red Sox turned to ace Cory Hall. Hall got Riley to pop up before walking the bases loaded. Hall induced an inning-ending ground ball from Ryan Seefus to end the threat.
"It is nice to have a guy like that where you know it's going to be lights out and the game is over," Regina coach Guido Aspeitia. Hall, a former Canadian national junior team pitcher, took some time to rest his arm after his college season and has been coming out of the bullpen for the Red Sox.
The Red Sox added four more runs in the ninth to finish off the way they started. Nolan Bracken was 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI for Regina while J.P. Willner was 3-for-4 with three runs driven in.
Cody Poche was the winning pitcher allowing three runs on five hits in his six innings of work. He struck out six batters.
Cory Olafson and Mark Gould both hit doubles for the Express.
The game was the first of a six-game home stand that continues tonight and Sunday at 7 p.m. The Express will start Robert Alcala (0-0) tonight against Swift Current and Steven Moranda (1-0) Sunday against Weyburn.
A double-header is scheduled against Sherwood Park Monday at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. They will also host Swift Current Tuesday and Lethbridge Thursday.
