The runs came early and often in Medicine Hat Friday for the Moose Jaw Miller Express.
The light-hitting local club jumped all over the host Mavericks in an 11-5 win that saw them post their second win in as many days and boost their record to 3-10.
They will return to Western Major Baseball League action tonight when they host the Yorkton Cardinals (7 p.m., Ross Wells Park).
The Express raced out to a 9-0 lead and scored in seven of the nine innings.
"It was good to play with a lead," said Express left fielder Cory Olafson. "We got ahead early and built on it. It was good to see. It's been awhile since we've had an early lead."
Newcomer Doug West made his presence felt in his second game with the Express. West hit a solo home run in the first and finished with three runs batted in and a stolen base. The right fielder played for Bethany University in Santa Cruz, Calif. this season.
"The kid can swing it," said Olafson.
There were a lot of Express players swinging a hot stick Friday.
"We scored in almost every inning," said Express coach J.R. Bierly. "Everyone has been doing it collectively as a team - executing better and stringing hits together."
Jaret Chatwood was fantastic in the lead-off spot. He was 3-for-6 with four runs batted in. Eric Sim was also 3-for-6 as he had a run, an RBI and a double.
Chris Gordon was 2-for-6 with two runs and a stolen base.
"The offence was excellent and we were executing with guys in scoring position," said Olafson who was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. "That's kind of where we've been struggling lately, but we executed well tonight."
The Express' starting pitchers haven't had a lot of room for error this year and though starter Robert Alcala had some runs to work with, he was at his stingy best.
Alcala allowed three hits and no runs in his six innings of work. He also struck out nine batters.
"He pitched another six shutout innings for us," said Bierly. "That's been pretty typical for him."
The Express' gave up three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth, but the Express responded with two more run of their own in the ninth to pad their lead again.
The Express will turn to Steve Moranda for tonight's start.
The one-day trip to Medicine Hat can be a little taxing, but the Express weren't complaining as they prepared to board the bus home.
"We can't wait to get back on the field," said Bierly. "That's for sure."
