They might have been bumped down to the B Pool last season, but Team Saskatchewan apparently wants nothing to do with the Baseball Canada Cup's lower division in the future.
Saskatchewan - which includes the Moose Jaw Cardinals' Ben Douglas and pitchers Josh Jelinski and Mike Miller along with the Moose Jaw Mallards Tanner Spencer - improved to 3-0 with a 10-9 victory over Prince Edward Island Thursday evening after defeating Newfoundland 10-1 earlier in the day.
The Baseball Canada Cup is an inter-provincial tournament featuring the top 17-and-under players in the country. Team are pooled based on their performance the previous season, with Saskatchewan having posted a 1-7 record out of the 'A' pool in 2008 and as a result dropping down.
Team Sask actually trailed 9-1 heading into their half of the fifth inning but scored three in that at bat before adding two more in the sixth, three in the seventh and taking the lead with a single marker in the eighth.
Douglas played a large part in the comeback, going 3-for-5 and knocking in a run.
Jelinski got the start for Saskatchewan and gave up four runs on four hits and three walks in two innings work. Miller came on in the fifth and held the fort as Team Sask rallied, surrendering two runs while walking five and striking out four in 3 1/3 innings.
Against P.E.I., Saskatchewan scored three runs in the first and added single markers in the fifth and sixth before putting five across in the seventh to go ahead 10-2.
Jelinski was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI while Miller went 0-for-3 and Douglas was hit by a pitch as a pinch-hitter and scored a run in the seventh.
Saskatchewan opened the tournament Wednesday with a 7-2 win over Manitoba, getting all their offence via three runs in the third and four in the fourth.
Douglas was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the win.
Team Sask faces Alberta Friday and Nova Scotia Saturday before moving into playoff action Sunday. The gold and bronze medal games are Sunday evening.
