Going into a battle against some of the toughest fastball teams around, the Moose Jaw Relics can be forgiven for being a little surprised at their 4-0 record after two days of play at the Western Canadian Masters Fastball Championship.
"I knew we had a good squad, but I didn't expect to be undefeated at this point," said coach Jamey Logan. "We're playing good, smart ball."
The Relics have posted some convincing wins against some tough rivals.
On Thursday, they opened the tournament with a 15-6 victory over the host Kamloops team. Kim Sundin picked up the win as pitcher, and also recorded two RBIs while going 3-for-4 at the plate. Krista Wick had two triples and four RBIs.
The Relics' second Thursday game was against BC 1, one of two teams from the province. That would prove to be the Moose Javians' closest game of the tournament, a 5-4 win that saw pitcher Yvonne Carlton go the distance. Jody Brown had two runs, while Sheri Logan, Kim Neithercut and Cindy Patterson also scored.
Friday saw more fireworks from the ladies as they beat the Saskatoon Connection - the same team that defeated them in provincials - 12-8. Brown and Carlton both went 3-for-4 with two runs each, while Lydia Bruce also had two scores in the revenge game.
In a bid to continue their perfect showing at the tournament, the Relics beat up on Calgary 13-3 late Friday. A close 3-2 game exploded with 10 runs in the final inning. Neithercut, Patterson, Wick and Sundin all scored twice, while Wick and Neithercut went 4-for-5 at the plate.
Coach Logan said the competition is tough, and the match ups are closer than one might think from the numbers.
"The scores don't really indicate how close the games are," he said.
The Relics have one final round robin game today against the Edmonton Silverline, who were undefeated going into their game against Saskatoon Friday night. Should Edmonton win, they would automatically face the Relics in the 1-2 playoff semifinal, regardless of Saturday's game against Moose Jaw. However, if Saskatoon wins and Moose Jaw loses to Edmonton, those three teams would all hold a 4-1 record, forcing a tiebreaker.
"They're a strong team," Logan said of Edmonton. "We've beat them before, but we've also been beat by them. It depends which team shows up. We can certainly beat them.
"Tonight's game will affect how we play them. If (Edmonton) wins . . . then tomorrow's game doesn't have any meaning to us.
"If it matters, then we'll throw everything we've got at them. But if it's just a practice game, we'll likely go a little easier and not show them our best."
The tournament finals take place Sunday.
Results from the Moose Jaw Masters - the men's team at the tournament - were unavailable as of press time.
