The Moose Jaw Mallards were unable to close out their appearance at the Baseball Canada national Bantam championships with a victory, instead dropping a 4-3 decision to Alberta in a consolation game. The Mallards finished 2-2 in their round robin after dropping a 16-0 decision to the eventual gold medalists from Ontario Saturday, finishing fourth in their pool and missing the playoff round. The end result wasn't too much of a concern for coach Mark Mann, though, as he felt the local squad would take much from the event. "I think overall it was a great experience for the kids, everyone had a lot of playing time and a lot of fun," he said Sunday evening from Vaughn, Ont. "These kids will take a lot away from this. Most of them move up to Midget and if they get another chance to get to nationals they know what it's all about." The Mallards did look to be on the verge of closing out the tournament with a victory, as they led 3-0 over Alberta before giving up two in the fifth and the winning and tying runs in the seventh.
