The Saskatchewan boys baseball team got rid of that goose egg in their record, picking up their first victory at the Jeux du Canada Games in Prince Edward Island.
The 4-3 win over British Columbia came in dramatic fashion, and it was none other than Moose Jaw's Jon Cotter who played the role of hero, hitting a double with two outs to allow the winning run to score in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Tied 2-2 after the first, Saskatchewan took a narrow lead in the bottom of the second, but B.C. tied it up in the top of the seventh. That set the stage for Cotter's big game-winning hit.
But he was a reluctant hero, preferring to compliment his teammates - in any way he could.
"Our first-baseman made a nice play where he took one right off the groin to save a base hit. That was pretty clutch," said Cotter. "He was down for a while."
The win comes after a 9-0 shellacking at the hands of Manitoba the day before to open the tournament. The team came out determined to put that game behind them.
