The Moose Jaw Miller Express are playing with confidence.
Monday the Express took a 5-1 lead over the Western Major Baseball League-leading Swift Current Indians. They promptly blew that lead thanks to an error and a bad inning.
Instead of reeling, the Express responded with a run to go ahead 6-5. The Express held on to win their fourth straight game.
The Express are now 12-18 on the season. The two teams will meet tonight at 7 p.m. at Ross Wells Park.
The Express got off to a strong start. Scott Hornstra drove in a run to tie the game and an inning later Luke Hardcastle hit a solo home run to put the Express ahead.
In the fifth, Hornstra hit a double to drive in Dustin Silva before Ben Douglas hit his first WMBL home run. The two-run shot gave the Express a 5-1 lead.
The lead didn’t last. The Express’ only error of the game played a part in a three-run seventh inning that tied the score at 5-5.
While the Express have found Mitchell Field to be a tough place to play in recent years, they showed their resolve and responded quickly. Fred Atkins and Jess Cooper hit two-out doubles in the eighth to retake the lead.
Atkins was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
Once the Express regained the lead, pitcher Paul Waterman didn’t allow a hit in the final two innings to win his first game of the season.
