The Moose Jaw Miller Express found a way to win games for the past week.
Tuesday when the Swift Current Indians got rolling, the Express didn’t have a response.
The Express grabbed an early 1-0 lead and watched as the Indians scored eight straight runs in an 11-3 win in Western Major Baseball League action. The loss snaps the Express’ four-game winning streak and leaves them with a 12-19 record.
“We’ve been really hot at the plate and we went cold today,” said Express head coach Michael Hunt. “We didn’t find a way with pitching, defence or productive at-bats to find a way to fight through it.
“It’s the unfortunate cliché of our head’s weren’t in it. There wasn’t a whole lot of life. There’s wasn’t much fight.”
The Express loss, combined with Saskatoon’s 5-3 win over Edmonton leaves the Express three games ahead of Saskatoon in the race for the final Central Division playoff spot.
Dustin Caplette-Tarrant threw five innings in his first start of the season. He surrendered five hits and four earned runs to take the loss.
“Dustin didn’t pitch great, but he didn’t pitch badly,” said Hunt.
Caplette-Tarrant got the start in place of the departed Sean Lydon. Monday
the Express learned that Lydon had signed with the Cincinnati Reds and will join the Florence Freedom in the Frontier League. The Freedom are an independent team based in Kentucky. Lydon will get his first start Saturday.
When that spot comes up in the rotation again on Sunday, another young local arm, Terry McNabb, will get the start.
“I want somebody from the bullpen to earn it,” said Hunt who said Lydon’s final scheduled start is still up for grabs.
Jess Cooper finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI for the Express.
