As they gathered for the last time this season, the Moose Jaw Miller Express celebrated a successful Western Major Baseball League season.
While they fell short of their championship aspirations, the team did win a playoff series as part of a strong post-season.
As gratifying as the on-field success was, it had the side benefit of having a positive affect on the team’s finances.
“It was our best season financially in the five years I’ve been with the club,” said Express president Darryl Pisio.
“We should be able to turn a profit. How much it’s going to be we’re unsure. From the revenues we drew in those three playoff games we’re looking very good — especially compared to last season.”
The Miller Express’ three playoff home dates drew a total of 1,731 fans.
Not only did the gate bring in a lot of money, but a packed Ross Wells Park also contributed to strong 50-50 and alcohol sales.
“We had three home playoff dates for the first time in eight years,” said Pisio who said the support of their fans of their corporate partners made their success possible.
“It’s been a really good year,” he added.
Beyond the bottom line, Pisio felt the playoff success bought the team something that money can’t buy.
Pisio told the players at their year end banquet: “You made the city of Moose Jaw proud and got the city excited again.”
