The odds will hopefully be in their favour this year at provincials, especially with the event being held in Moose Jaw.
The Moose Jaw Minor AAA All-Star Little League baseball team has been picked and the practices have begun at Gamble Diamond. The nine and 10-year-old players are ready to try their first provincial win.
“It’s the best players in this age group,” stated Randy Larose, coach of the team. “We held tryouts a couple of weeks ago and these are the top 12 kids.”
The team is currently practicing for a tournament in Lethbridge, Alta. in early July.
“It’s just a little tune-up tournament,” he said.
The team will have another tournament the following weekend in Melville. From July 20-22, the little league provincials will be held in Moose Jaw. Five teams from around the province including Pilot Butte, Saskatoon and two teams from Regina.
“It looks like we are going have a pretty good season, we have a strong team,” said Larose. “I have six returning players from last year and the new players are pretty skilled kids. We have a pretty good shot at going far this year.”
If the team wins the provincial event, they will be off to the Prairie Regional in Medicine Hat, Alta and will be held the weekend after the provincial event.
“I coached this team last year and the kids have grown so much over the winter and have incredible skill now,” he said.
The Minor All-Stars are trying to coordinate a couple of exhibition games with Pilot Butte before the tournaments in order to get a couple extra games in which to gel as a team.
“They want to come here and play a couple of games, so hopefully we can get something together for next week,” said Larose. “The tournaments are to get the boys gelling and get to know each other.”
The team practices Wednesday and Friday evenings this week at Gamble Diamond.
