As Briercrest women’s basketball coach Shane Sowden enters his third year at the helm of the team, he pauses to reflect on how much things have changed in that time.
Since finishing out of last place for the first time in nine years last season — albeit with a poor 4-16 record in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference — the Clippers are looking better than ever, on every level. “It’s more than just wins and losses,” says Sowden. “It’s changing the whole culture of just accepting mediocrity, and bringing in athletes who want to compete every day, who are going to grow and want to stick around for a few years. We’re starting to see that now.”
