The Central Cyclones senior girls team has only two players returning from last year’s city championship team, but after finishing third at the Regina Johnson Tip-Off tournament this past weekend, the team’s optimism — and expectations — are on the rise.

“We looked pretty good,” said Cyclones coach Jocelyn Wigmore. “The girls worked really hard and played with a lot of intensity.

“We set the bar for what we expect for the season.”

The Cyclones beat Johnson 65-51 Friday to open the tournament.    They lost the semifinal 59-43 to Swift Current before beating Regina O’Neill 70-45 to earn bronze medals.

The Moose Jaw High School Basketball League season will open tonight with Peacock traveling to face Vanier and Central hosting Caronport. The girls games will begin at 6:15 p.m., with the boys to follow at 8 p.m.

There will be five teams in each league with Assiniboia playing in the girls league and Riverview/Cornerstone playing in the boys.
