The Peacock Toilers used a big third quarter to pull away from the Cornerstone/Riverview Falcons in senior boys basketball action on Tuesday night. The Toilers outscored them by 28 points in the third quarter and cruised to a 78-42 victory.
“We played well in the third quarter,” said Peacock’s head coach Bryan Adams. “We had a little bit more energy and did some good things.”
Peacock played their 10th game in 13 days, but Adams was pleased with the effort the boys had throughout the second half of the game.
“We didn’t have lots of spunk in this first half,” Adams said. “But I was pleased because we were still doing a lot of good things.”
The Falcons have set a goal from themselves for the year, trying to score 10 points or more a quarter and when that is accomplished, it is still a little victory for the team.
“We got over 40 points, so we our goal,” said Flacons head coach Dwight Cameron. “We averaged 10 points a quarter, so we did it.”
Unfortunately for the Falcons, these small victories don’t equal a game victory, but the team is still working on a new offence in hopes it pushes the team further.
“I told the guys, I am only going to the guys that know what they are doing,” stated Cameron. “At this point of the season, we are thinking forward to provincials and conference playoffs…if we aren’t executing now then only certain players are going to play.”
The Toilers used a tight pressure defence in order to create turnovers, which they carried over into easy fast break chances.
“Anytime you get the other team to turn the ball over is you get easy opportunities,” Adams said. “We managed a few opportunities and convert those opportunities, which helped us get the win.”
Although this season hasn’t gone the way the Falcons had hoped it would, Cameron and the team still try to maintain a positive outlook on the season.
“Sometimes you just have to make the best of the opportunities you are given and the guys have kept a good attitude,” Cameron said.
The first half was close and competitive, but with a lack of depth on the Falcons bench, they just couldn’t keep up for the full 40 minutes.
“Give Peacock credit, they got more intense on defence and applied pressure and we don’t like pressure all that much,” said Cameron. “They really stepped it up on defence and capitalized on our turnovers, those are careless on our part…we can’t do that.”
The Toilers will be looking to keep making improvements as the regular season continues with hopes of peaking at the right time.
“We haven’t taken any giant steps forward this year, but the kids have been working hard,” said Adams. The basketball season is a marathon, not a sprint. Its what you do at the end of the year, not at the beginning that matters. Hopefully we will continue to see improvements.”
