Moose Jaw’s Pat Simmons lost 5-3 against Kindersley’s Brad Heidt in the final at the World Curling Tour’s Point Optical Curling Classic in Saskatoon.
Simmons and his Davidson rink of third Gerry Adam, second Jeff Sharp and lead Steve Laycock earned $10,000 for their strong weekend performance.
Simmons enjoyed a 3-2 lead after four ends, but Heidt took the lead as he scored twice with the hammer in the sixth and crucially stole a point in the seventh to take a two-point lead coming home. In the eighth, Heidt ran Simmons out of rocks.
Simmons began Monday by beating Sean Geall 8-2 in the semifinals and Winnipeg’s Vic Peters 8-4 in the quarter-finals.
Simmons scored four in the first end with the hammer against Geall — who hails from New Westminster, B.C. He added two more in the fourth and stole two more in the fifth to end the game.
In the quarters, Peters scored three with the hammer in the third end to take a 3-2 lead. Simmons chipped away tying the game and then stealing a single point in consecutive ends to take a 5-3 lead.
Simmons scored three with the hammer in the eighth to put the game away.
