Pat Simmons survived a late comeback by attempt by Kevin Martin, to even his record at 1-1 at the Roar of the Rings Olympic curling trials in Edmonton.
Simmons and his Davidson rink of third Gerry Adam, second Jeff Sharp and lead Steve Laycock beat Martin 8-5 in Monday’s afternoon draw at Rexall Place.
Simmons stole singles in consecutive ends to take a 5-2 lead heading into the eighth end. Martin rallied to score three with the hammer in the eighth end to tie the game.
Simmons scored a single in the ninth end to come home leading 6-5 without the hammer. In the 10th end Simmons had a stone buried in the back of the four foot and watched as Martin’s hit attempt flashed past to allow Simmons a steal of two and the game.
