It was a bit of the good and a bit of the bad for Bob Brown at provincial junior men’s curling championship in Prince Albert on Monday.

Topics :
Bushell Park Curling Club , Western Honda Super League

The Bushell Park Curling Club skip and his rink of third Gray Auckland, second Karson Fritzler and lead Bryce Marcotte surrendered six points over the final four ends in dropping a 10-4 decision to Saskatoon Nutana’s Mike Armstrong before rebounding for a 9-3 win over Assiniboia’s Kyle Batty.

Against Batty, Brown put up singles in each of the first three ends before scoring five in the fifth for a 6-1 lead. Batty — whose coach and father Alan is the reigning Western Honda Super League champion — scored three in seven to close gap but would get no closer.

It was a similar situation for Bushell Park’s Shawn Meyer, who scored three in the third and fifth ends on the way to a 9-5 win over Batty but then dropped a 9-7 decision to Saskatoon’s Josh Heidt in the nightcap.

Meyer and his rink of third Derek McKenzie, second Chadd McKenzie and lead Derek Dejaegher surrendered three in the first against Heidt but battled back to tie the game 4-4 after six.

Heidt struck for four the very next end, but Meyer again clawed into striking distance with a deuce in eight and steal in nine to close to 8-7. Heidt made good use of the hammer in the final end and took a single for the win.

Brown is currently third in his round robin pool at 2-1 while Meyer is fourth at 1-2. Heidt and Armstrong are tied for the lead at 3-0.

Meyer faces Saskatoon’s Brent Flaman in the morning draw and Brown to close out the round robin Tuesday evening. Brown plays Heidt in the morning draw.
