Moose Jaw’s Pat Simmons is off to a perfect start at the BDO Classic Canadian Open in Winnipeg.
Simmons and his rink of third Gerry Adam, second Jeff Sharp and lead Steve Laycock won both their first two round robin games at the Grand Slam event Thursday, defeating U.S. Olympian John Shuster 6-3 in the morning draw before following with a 6-3 win over Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen.
Things get decidedly tougher for the four time former Tankard provincial champion today as he faces Bradford, Ont.’s Dale Matchett (0-3) in the morning draw followed by Jeff Stoughton in the afternoon and fellow unbeaten Glen Howard in the evening.
The top eight teams out of the three round robin pools advance to the playoffs beginning Saturday afternoon.
The Canadian Open is the third of four major World Curling Tour events on the season.
