Lawton wins in opening draw

John Epping made a splash in the opening draw of the Capital One Canada Cup of Curling when his Toronto foursome knocked off the defending champion Kevin Martin rink 7-6.

Epping used a four-ender in the third end to take early control of the match.

The 9 a.m. draw was the first of three draws on the opening day of competition at Mosaic Place.

In other men's action, Jeff Stoughton beat Glenn Howard 9-5.

In the women's draw Saskatoon's Stefanie Lawton only needed eight ends to dispatch Sherry Middaugh 10-4.

In the other game, the Jennifer Jones defeated Crystal Webster 9-7. Jones gave birth to her first child two weeks ago, so third Kaitlyn Lawes is filling at skip for the Jones rink.
